Frequently Asked Questions

Got Questions? We've Got Answers.

Everything you need to know about GEAR Montana's apprenticeship program, CEU courses, and enrollment process.

Who can enroll in the apprenticeship program?

You must be at least 18 years old, hold a high school diploma or GED, have a valid driver's license, and be employed by a licensed electrical contractor. You must also be registered with the Montana Department of Labor apprenticeship program.

How much does the apprenticeship cost?

Tuition is $1,950 per year — all inclusive. This covers all instructional materials, Mike Holt textbooks, digital access, and live-stream technology. There are no hidden fees or additional material costs. Payment plans are available — contact us to discuss options.

How long is the program?

The apprenticeship is a four-year program. Students complete 144 hours of related technical instruction (RTI) per year alongside their on-the-job training hours with their employer.

Is GEAR Montana state-approved?

Yes. GEAR Montana is approved by the Montana Department of Labor as a Registered Apprenticeship program. Our courses count toward the RTI requirement for Montana electrical apprentices.

What is hybrid instruction?

Hybrid instruction means classes are offered both in-person in Kalispell and via live-stream for students across Montana. All sessions are recorded so students can review material at any time through the Mike Holt student portal.

What curriculum does GEAR use?

GEAR uses the Mike Holt Electrical Training Series — the industry standard for NEC-based apprenticeship education. All instruction is delivered by a Mike Holt Platinum Certified Instructor.

What CEU courses do you offer?

We currently offer two CEU courses: the 16-hour NEC 2023 Code Update ($350) and the 8-hour Grounding & Bonding ($185). Both are approved for Montana electrical license renewal. The July deadline applies — don't wait to register.

Do I need to be local to attend?

No. Live-stream access is available for all courses, so students across Montana can participate. In-person sessions are held in Kalispell.
